I don't normally do headshots, but when a mom blogger asks you to do both her family photos and some lifestyle shots for her site, you always say yes! Plus, Pink Pineapple Studios was an absolute dream for this session!
Brittiona Lewis is the founder of The Black Mom Collective. In Brittiona's own words, "Brittiona Lewis is a mother, wife and advocate for Black moms and women all over the world. She created The Black Mom Collective in response to Blackout Day. She noticed major brands abruptly posting black squares on social media in response to the countless murders of Black men, women, and children, in which they made no prior mention of the Black Lives Matters movement before. The Collective was formed to advocate on behalf of Black mothers; and hold brands accountable for establishing long term plans to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that benefit our community. In addition to the original mission, it also became a sanctuary for all things Black mamahood.
Born and raised in Texas, Brittiona was the first in her family of two generations to attend and graduate college. In 2012, she graduated from Texas Tech University with a BBA in Management Information Systems. She has also completed a Master’s Certification Program in Business Analytics from Michigan State University and received a certificate in Management from Southern Methodist University. This education helped her to break into a career as an Application Security Program Manager at Verizon, where she works today as she simultaneously builds The Black Mom Collective community.
Despite her success with education and multiple promotions during her vocation, Brittiona’s greatest achievement is becoming a wife and mother. She and her husband of two years, Jeremiah Lewis, raise their beautiful daughter, Jayde, in Aubrey, Texas. Brittiona and Jeremiah put family first, and the adventures of motherhood and parenthood are what fueled the birth of The Black Mom Collective.
Fed up and frustrated with finding little to no avenues with resources specifically designed for Black women and moms, Brittiona decided to make her own. The Black Mom Collective focuses on sisterhood and inviting Black mothers into the conversation with corporations and job opportunities. Brittiona ensures The Black Mom Collective’s brand pillars to include information and access to Health & Wellness, Financial Literacy, Education, Parenting and New Motherhood.
She is adamant that Black women are not boxed into a category of “one size fits all.” Brittiona fights to stay true to herself (which means being a proud Leo and requiring acquaintances to learn how to pronounce her name, and not simply call her “Britt”), and she emboldens Black moms to do the same."
Brittiona is seriously so sweet and absolutely amazing to work with. I did a family photography session for her a few days after her branding session, and her little girl Jayde is just the cutest thing! It makes me so happy to see black voices being lifted up. There are so many obstacles black mothers face, and I'm glad to know that Brittiona is working to change and bring awareness to all of that.
